Exhibition, Porto City Hall
In Portugal's history of WWII, 1941, holds an almost unique set of events of both the artist refugees and the spying, deception and espionage that took place against the backdrop of the country's safehaven neutrality and along its dramatic Atlantic coastline. This 96 page book catalogues the exhibition, 1941: Guggenheim and Fleming, Artists & Spies in World War II Portugal, that comprises over 100 photographs and archival documents drawn from the latest research by Neill Lochery and his books on WWII Portugal. It published in a dual language edition English and Portuguese.

During WWII neutral Portugal became one of the last points of exit from the death and destruction of war torn Europe. In 1941, refugees from across the European continent and Axis and Allied spies flooded into the country. Among those arriving in Portugal during 1941 were writers Kay Boyle, Laurance Vail and artists Max Ernst, Leonora Carrington along with prominent Jewish artist Marc Chagall and the art collector Peggy Guggenheim.

At the same time, a host of spies began operating across the country, British Intelligence office Ian Fleming, planning Operation Goldeneye would later base his James Bond character and his first novel Casino Royale on this time in Portugal.

Lisbon, 1939-45: the untold story of Portugal and the Jewish refugees
Lecture, University College London
During World War II, Portugal was frantically trying to hold on to its self-proclaimed wartime neutrality, but was increasingly caught in the middle of the economic, and naval wars between the Allies and the Nazis. To complicate matters further, thousands of refugees, many of them Jewish, flooded into Lisbon seeking a passage to the United States or Palestine. This talk will present the little known, and yet vitally important history of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, during World War II.
